Review and Preview :

World equity markets were very volatile last week. The ECB did not bring down their negative interest rate enough for investors on Thursday. They went from -0.2 to -0.3%, and not the -0.4% investors were expecting, causing stock prices to fall hard, and the Euro currency to soar to its greatest one-day gain in 7 years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, for example, fell a whopping 252 points that day. The Euro currency exploded from an 8-month low of 1.0538 to a high that day of 1.0980. The U.S. Dollar and Treasuries fell hard and precious metals soared.

The next day, however, the U.S. Labor department reported 211,000 new jobs were added to the economy in November, above the 200,000 the market expected. September and October's numbers were also revised upwards. This was not unexpected. Last week's column stated, "Once again, the Moon is in Virgo, near to Jupiter and the Moon's North Node. Virgo rules jobs, and Jupiter with the Moon in Virgo suggests a good number again". The DJIA surged up 369 points.

In precious metals, Gold fell to its lowest level since February 2010 when it dropped to 1045.40 on Thursday. By Friday, it was up to 1088.30. Silver fell to a new 6-year low of 13.80 on Thursday. By Friday, it was back to 14.61. Gold bugs are happy again, at least for now.

Short-Term Geocosmics :

Geocosmic signatures suggest that this is going to be another intensely challenging week where security and financial markets are concerned.

First, Mars (planet of war and aggression, if not channeled otherwise) will square Pluto and be in opposition to Uranus December 6-10. The sharp swings in financial markets, caused by unexpected policy announcements by the ECB, is a reflection of this dynamic. So too was the shootout in San Bernardino, California last week that killed 14 people and wounded 21 others by a couple who seemed to be living the American dream. Once again, this led to pleas for greater gun controls. However, Uranus is still in Aries through 2018. Guns, bullets, and bombs will probably remain in great demand through this time. In fact, the U.S. Air Force announced last week that it is running out of bombs in its bombing campaign against ISIS.

But back to financial markets. Mars forming a T-square with Uranus and Pluto is not only a dangerous time in the world, but a highly volatile signature for financial markets. It can coincide with reversals or breakouts of any markets that are near long-term support or resistance.

We also note that Venus is now leaving Libra (November 8-December 4) and entering Scorpio. This should help Gold and Silver, for important cycle lows tend to happen when Venus is in Libra, just as it appears to have done this time with last week's lows.

It was a wild week, and we may have another coming up. Short-term traders will probably like this, for there will be many short-term trading opportunities. Their mantra of "maximum profit potential with minimal market exposure" is being realized. However, for those who like to establish positions and hold on for a while, this may be a bit discomforting.

Is there a lesson for this week ? Avoid danger and arguments if possible, use this time to generate new and revolutionary ideas, be inventive but not stupid, and when trading, expect the unexpected and be nimble.

Longer-Term Thoughts and mundane astrology :

" People try to put us d-down
Just because we g-g-get around
Things they do look awful c-c-cold
Yeah, I hope I die before I get old"

•  The Who, "My Generation", http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/who/mygeneration.html

New survey findings suggest that when asked how they feel during the school day U.S. high school students consistently invoke three feelings : "tired", "stressed", and "bored". - Greg Toppo, "Survey Finds High School Kids Tired, Stressed, and Bored", USA Today, sometime in November (forgot to note the date).

Even as I write, Amherst College is exploding with non- negotiable demands from a student group that the president apologized for (among other things) Amherst's "institutional legacy of white supremacy, colonialism, anti-black racism, anti-Latinx racism, anti-Native American racism, anti-Native/indigenous racism, anti-Asian racism, anti-Middle Eastern racism, heterosexism, cis-sexism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism, mental health stigma, and classism". Really, you can't make this up. - Roger Kimball, "The Rise of the College Crybullies", Wall Street Journal, November 14-15, 2015.

Social scientists have broken today's society down into three primary generational groups : Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), Gen X (1964-late 1970's, early 1980's) and the Millennials (late 1970's through 1990's). Each generation has its own unique group characteristics, which perhaps can be better understood by astrology. However, astrology would probably bracket these generations slightly different.

For instance, the Baby Boomer might be considered the Pluto in Leo, Neptune in Libra generation (1942-1957). This is a very creative cosmic combination, which exercise their power to transform (Pluto) the whole concept of leadership (Leo) in society. They also find their inspiration in music, romantic thought, and peace movements (Neptune), while at the same time upsetting and rejecting the status quo (Pluto in Leo). To many, this was the "self-absorbed" generation - the urge for pleasure all the time and the quest for eternal youth.

Pluto then moved into Virgo (1957-1972) and Neptune into Scorpio (1956-1970). Here, the power of Pluto was exercised in the urge to purify the environment, get rid of pollution and anything environmentally, politically, or socially toxic. Neptune in Scorpio saw this process of ridding corruption and pollution as a noble quest, and if people, resisted, they should be forced to change. They also transformed social attitudes about sex - although how, I am not exactly sure. I am not exactly sure this generation knows what it wants sexually, because Pluto in Virgo wants to purify everything, have a procedure, protocol, and rules before it is appropriate. But Neptune in Scorpio has strong desires that are fulfilled in the realm of fantasy. This is a strange and conflicted combination. It is very hard to please because it wants both perfection it can control (via the rules) and a mystery it can never grasp.

The next generation combines Pluto in Libra (1971-1984) with Neptune in Sagittarius (1970-1984). Here we see the power of transformation (Pluto) directed to the concept of relationships and partnerships (Libra). Marriage is not what we thought. Maybe the concept of marriage as an ideal is not realistic, because so many partnerships end up in separation and divorce - with steep financial and social consequences. But then there is education, philosophical and religious thought, and the ideals that go along with them (Neptune in Sagittarius). How many of todays disenfranchised are choosing radical ideologies and religions as a result of broken relationships ? How many are from this generation ?.

The last cosmic generation we will look at is Pluto in Scorpio (1983-1995) and Neptune in Capricorn (1984-1998), which covers today's Millennials. It is said that they are frugal and will not spend money, although they are also demanding to be paid high wages for whatever service they perform or product they sell. Volunteering ? Forget it. Joining organizations ? Forget it. Why pay membership dues when you can get what you want for free from the internet ? This is a very pragmatic and frugal combination. Pluto and Scorpio both pertain to debt. With this generation, it becomes an accepted part of life. They start out their careers, after education, with huge student loans, and they understandably resent this (so do their parents). They have high ideals of what they believe they can accomplish (Neptune in Capricorn), so they demand to be paid high wages immediately. But then they have difficulty understanding what they are supposed to be doing - except making money and not spending it (or their time) on altruistic causes, unless those causes can provide immediate gratification, personal justice, or gains in career.

Of course, this is an all-too-brief and incomplete synopsis of the characteristics of generations as viewed by one astrologer. I simply want to point out that every generation, like every person, is unique and different. And every generation is at odds with the prior generation(s) in some ways. It has always been that way, and always will be that way. The youth will always believe that the older generations put them down. They will always rebel. And they will hope they never grow old like the generations before them that just take up space.

But you know what ? The Millennials with Neptune in Capricorn have a real life lesson coming up now that Neptune is being squared by Saturn, ruler of Capricorn (November 2015 through September 2016). It is not a good time to succumb to feelings of being bored, tired, and stressed. That's the easy path in these difficult days ahead, and with Neptune in Capricorn, if you snooze, you lose. However, if you put your mind to solving problems rather than being - or becoming - a problem because you are bored, you just might find that even though "...you can't always get what you want, you get what you need". A lesson from one generation to another.

To be continued (next week).

I am oftentimes asked for recommendations of a money manager who uses my methods, since I won't manage other people's money. The thing is, almost all money managers I know use their own systems. But many subscribe to my services and share my thoughts about the future of the economy, various financial markets, and how to position one's portfolio along these lines. One money manager who subscribes to our services that I would suggest for those looking to structure a longer-term portfolio, such as a retirement account, is Duke O'Neill of Boulder, Colorado. He can be reached at dukeoneil1@gmail.com, or 1-(303) 545-5837. For those looking for a professional trader of commodity and futures contract might consider Ted Lee Fisher at ted.fisher@comcast.net. Ted is a legend in financial futures and has a seat on the CME. Both are very knowledgeable of the tools I use, of the way I am looking at markets, and yet each makes their own decisions as to exactly when to enter and exit any market. They will be more than happy to assist you.

To the above list, I would also like to recommend long-term MMA subscriber Erwin Brunner of Zurich, Switzerland. Mr. Brunner is the founder of BrunnerInvest AG. One of his five funds was awarded theBest in-house fund of funds in the world recently. Mr. Brunner is a former director of the Swiss Banking Corporation (today it is known as UBS), and a general director of Rothschild Bank in Zurich. As an independent wealth manager for high net worth individuals and institutional clients only, he places his clients into the funds of the best performing fund managers in the world, via his own research and experience. For high net worth readers interested in Mr. Brunner's funds, please contact him through www.brunnerinvest.ch.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the addition of Egon von Greyerz to MMA Investment Retreat faculty of presenters. I met Egon last week in Girona, Spain, at a special gathering attended by MMTA Graduates Nitin Bhandari (India), Philipp Beyer (Germany), Henry Canciglia (USA) and myself. Egon is an expert on Gold. He owns Matterhorn Asset Management, a Swiss Asset Management company specializing in wealth preservation, located in Zurich ( www.goldswitzerland.com). He was also the person who initiated the "Save Our Swiss Gold" Act in Switzerland late last year, which would have required the Swiss National Bank to back up their assets with 20% Gold holdings. The initiative failed, but his reasons for initiating this effort are still valid. Egon is very interested in MMA cycles' work, and will share his outlook on Gold and the world debt. This is a real treat!

Disclaimer and statement of purpose : The purpose of this column is not to predict the future movement of various financial markets. However, that is the purpose of the MMA (Merriman Market Analyst) subscription services. This column is not a subscription service. It is a free service, except in those cases where a fee may be assessed to cover the cost of translating this column from English into a non-English language. This weekly report is written with the intent to educate the reader on the relationship between astrological factors and collective human activities as they are happening. In this regard, this report will oftentimes report what happened in various stock and financial markets throughout the world in the past week, and discuss that movement in light of the geocosmic signatures that were in effect. It will then identify the geocosmic factors that will be in effect in the next week, or even month, or even years, and the author’s understanding of how these signatures will likely affect human activity in the times to come. The author (Merriman) will do this from a perspective of a cycle’s analyst looking at the military, political, economic, and even financial markets of the world. It is possible that some forecasts will be made based on these factors. However, the primary goal is to both educate and alert the reader as to the psychological climate we are in, from an astrological perspective. The hope is that it will help the reader understand these psychological dynamics that underlie (or coincide with) the news events and hence financial markets of the day.
